About LocalMesh
Volunteers building an independent radio network across the UK.
Who we are
LocalMesh started with a simple idea: communication shouldn't depend entirely on mobile networks and internet. These services can be disrupted by storms, power cuts, or technical failures. We're building an independent alternative.
We're a group of volunteers – radio enthusiasts, tech-minded individuals, and community-minded people – who maintain MeshCore radio infrastructure across the UK. The network is decentralised – no single point of failure, no company in control.
LocalMesh is entirely volunteer-run. We receive no corporate funding and generate no revenue. Everyone involved contributes because they believe communities should have backup communication options.
What we're Building
A radio network that works independently of normal infrastructure. No mobile masts, no internet, no mains power needed — LocalMesh provides a way to reach family, neighbours, and your community using LoRa radio technology.
Infrastructure-Independent
No reliance on mobile networks, internet providers, or mains electricity.
Volunteer-Built
Every repeater is installed by a volunteer. Every participant strengthens the network.
Free to use
Buy a device once, use the network forever. No subscriptions, no fees.
What we believe
-
✓
Preparedness: Having a backup communication option before you need it.
-
✓
Accessibility: Emergency communication shouldn't require technical expertise. If you can pair Bluetooth headphones, you can use LocalMesh.
-
✓
Community: Every repeater benefits the whole area. We build resilience together.
-
✓
Privacy: Private messages use end-to-end encryption. Your conversations stay yours.
-
✓
Affordability: Entry-level devices cost around £40. Emergency preparedness shouldn't be expensive.
How it started
LocalMesh began when a group of radio enthusiasts realised that LoRa mesh technology had become affordable and accessible. The hardware was cheap, the software was open-source – the missing piece was awareness and coordination.
We chose MeshCore as our preferred protocol because it's efficient and handles busy networks well. LocalMesh exists to help people across the UK set up independent radio communication.
The network today
The LocalMesh network continues to grow:
Coverage varies by location and depends on volunteer participation. Check the coverage map to see what's active near you.
Get involved
LocalMesh grows through participation. You can help by:
- → Installing a repeater – even a small solar-powered one extends emergency coverage
- → Getting a device and becoming part of the network
- → Helping newcomers get set up
- → Telling others who might want emergency communication backup
Ready to get prepared?
Join volunteers across the UK building independent radio infrastructure. LocalMesh is a volunteer project – coverage varies by location. Not a replacement for emergency services – always dial 999 in emergencies.
