What is LocalMesh?

A radio network that works without internet or mobile signal.

Communication without infrastructure

LocalMesh is a volunteer-built radio network across the UK. It works independently of mobile networks and internet, providing an alternative way to reach family, neighbours, and your community.

The technology behind it is MeshCore – an efficient mesh protocol running on compact LoRa radio devices.

No mobile masts needed. No internet required. No mains power necessary. Just a pocket-sized device and your smartphone.

How do you get prepared?

Ready when needed

Your radio is set up – test it, then keep it charged

LocalMesh versus MeshCore – what's the difference?

LocalMesh

The Network: LocalMesh is the UK volunteer network building and maintaining radio communication infrastructure. We install repeaters, help with setup, and make the technology accessible.

MeshCore

The Technology: MeshCore is the open-source protocol that makes devices communicate. It handles message routing through the network of radios and repeaters.

In short: LocalMesh = the UK volunteer network, MeshCore = the technology we use.

When is LocalMesh useful?

Practical situations where LocalMesh comes in handy

Power cuts

Mobile masts and broadband rely on mains power — LocalMesh doesn't

🎪

Remote areas

Hillwalking, camping, or anywhere without mobile coverage

🏔️

Severe weather

Storms or flooding that disrupt normal communication infrastructure

🏘️

Events and gatherings

Festivals, outdoor events, or crowded venues where mobile networks get congested

How does it work?

You send text messages through the MeshCore network. These don't travel via the internet – they hop directly between devices using radio waves on the 868 MHz band.

When your message can't reach the recipient directly, repeaters relay it onwards. Volunteers install these repeaters across the UK to extend emergency coverage.

The network intelligently finds routes between devices, ensuring messages arrive even when some paths are blocked.

The LocalMesh network

Volunteers across the UK have installed 800+ repeaters providing emergency communication coverage.

LocalMesh helps people set up independent radio communication. We make it accessible to everyone, regardless of technical background.

Check the coverage map to see what's active in your area.

🎯

Volunteer-Built coverage

Coverage depends on volunteer participation and varies by location. The more people join, the stronger the network becomes.

Emergency communication, built by volunteers.
