Frequent questions about the network

What range can be achieved?
This is a mesh network – messages can automatically traverse repeaters. Communication between London and Birmingham, or further, may be possible provided repeaters exist along the route. Range depends on elevation and antenna quality (30-40 km achievable from elevated positions).
Can I use the network without nearby repeaters?
Yes! Direct communication with other participants within range works independently. Range varies with elevation and antenna – from several hundred metres at ground level to 30-40 km from elevated positions. However, repeaters substantially improve coverage. Consider hosting one yourself!
How can I check coverage in my area?
The interactive map displays current activity. You can also enquire in the community about active participants in your region. Alternatively, acquire hardware and conduct your own tests.
What does hosting a repeater cost?
A repeater costs approximately £50-100 as a one-time purchase. Power consumption is negligible (roughly £1-2 annually). No subscriptions or recurring charges. You strengthen the network whilst ensuring your own connectivity.
Can the network fail entirely?
Individual repeaters may go offline (due to power issues or hardware problems), but the mesh network can automatically discover alternative routes. More repeaters means greater resilience. Coverage varies by location and depends on volunteer participation.
