Outdoor communications

Stay connected in wild places

From the Scottish Munros to the Pembrokeshire coast, Britain's finest outdoor areas often lack mobile coverage. MeshCore keeps you in contact with companions and family.

The Signal problem outdoors

Britain offers extraordinary outdoor experiences. Wild camping under Scottish skies, multi-day walks through Wales, cycling the South Downs, sea kayaking in the Hebrides. Yet these places share one frustrating characteristic: mobile coverage is absent or unreliable.

Network operators focus on population centres. Once you venture into National Parks, remote coastlines, or hill country, coverage becomes patchy at best, non-existent at worst. EE, Vodafone, Three, O2 all struggle in genuinely rural terrain.

MeshCore offers off-grid communication without any mobile infrastructure. Whether coordinating with companions at camp, keeping track of walking partners, or having an alternative communication option, MeshCore can work where phones do not.

Why outdoor users choose MeshCore

πŸ“‘

Coverage independence

LoRa radio connects devices directly. No masts required, no provider contracts, no coverage maps to consult.

πŸ”‹

Multi-day battery

A single charge lasts days of active use, or weeks in standby. Outlasts any smartphone in field conditions.

πŸ—ΊοΈ

Position sharing

Transmit your coordinates to companions. Essential for group navigation, meeting points, and emergency response.

⛰️

Open terrain advantage

British hills and open countryside suit LoRa perfectly. Line-of-sight links of 10-30km from elevated positions become achievable.

🌧️

Weather proof

British weather is famously unpredictable. MeshCore devices tolerate rain, wind, and cold without issues.

πŸ†˜

Safety margin

When someone in your group encounters difficulty, you can communicate even without mobile Signal. Potentially life-saving.

Outdoor questions

What range is realistic in the hills?

From a summit, 15-30km direct range is routinely achievable. In valleys, range shortens but messages can hop through other devices. The mesh network extends effective reach significantly.

Will it survive British weather?

Most MeshCore devices are water-resistant. For heavy rain or water activities, use a waterproof pouch. Radio Signals transmit through plastic without issues.

Does it replace a PLB or satellite device?

MeshCore connects to other MeshCore users, not to rescue services directly. For serious solo backcountry work, consider both. For group activities, MeshCore provides excellent coordination capability.

Suitable for DofE expeditions?

Excellent for Duke of Edinburgh expeditions. Groups stay connected, supervisors can check in, and coverage exists in the remote terrain where these expeditions typically operate.

How does cold affect battery?

Like all batteries, cold reduces capacity temporarily. Keep the device close to your body in winter conditions. MeshCore's low power consumption makes this rarely problematic.

Does it work in woodland?

Trees reduce range compared to open terrain, but LoRa penetrates woodland better than mobile Signals. In dense forest, keep devices closer together.

Explore Britain with an off-grid option

British countryside offers incredible adventures. MeshCore provides an off-grid communication option when mobile networks are unavailable. LocalMesh is a community project. Coverage depends on volunteer participation and varies by location. Not a replacement for emergency services – always dial 999 in emergencies.
