Messages that travel without internet
With MeshCore mesh network, your texts hop from device to device via radio waves – no WiFi, no mobile Signal, no broadband.
What happens when connectivity dies?
We send hundreds of messages daily without thinking. WhatsApp, iMessage, SMS – all require working networks. But what happens when those networks vanish? A storm takes down the power grid. A cyberattack cripples your ISP. Suddenly that constant connectivity evaporates.
This is where offline messaging proves its worth. MeshCore transmits via LoRa radio Signals across the 868 MHz band. Your message travels from radio to radio, hopping through the mesh until it reaches its destination – no internet backbone required.
The clever bit: messages queue automatically when recipients are temporarily out of range. The mesh holds your text and delivers it the moment they reappear. Nothing lost, nothing delayed unnecessarily.
How radio-based messaging works
MeshCore uses store-and-forward principles that predate the internet itself:
1. Type your message
Compose on your smartphone via the MeshCore app, or directly on devices with built-in keyboards. Select recipient or broadcast to a group channel.
2. Radio transmission
Your LoRa device broadcasts on the 868 MHz band. From elevated positions, Signals travel 30-40 kilometres. Buildings and terrain reduce this, but the mesh compensates.
3. Mesh relay
If direct delivery fails, intermediate devices automatically forward your message. Each hop brings it closer to the recipient.
4. Store if necessary
When the next link is temporarily unavailable, the previous device holds the message. Once connection resumes, forwarding continues automatically.
5. Delivery confirmed
Your message arrives at the destination device. Even if the recipient was offline when you sent it, they receive everything once they return to the mesh.
What makes offline messaging work
Truly infrastructure-free
MeshCore operates on radio frequencies, not the internet. No routers, no ISPs, no mobile masts. If your device has battery, it transmits.
Intelligent path finding
The mesh continuously discovers optimal routes. Blocked paths trigger automatic rerouting through alternative nodes.
Store-and-forward capability
Temporary outages do not necessarily mean lost messages. The network can queue and retry delivery when recipients return to range.
Privacy for personal conversations
One-to-one messages use end-to-end encryption. Relay nodes forward sealed packets they cannot read. Group channels remain open for all members.
Why offline messaging matters
Works when networks fail
No dependency on infrastructure that collapses during emergencies. The mesh functions precisely when conventional systems do not.
Messages find their way
You need not worry about range or routing. The network handles path selection and relaying automatically.
Nothing gets lost
Store-and-forward ensures messages survive temporary disconnections. Recipients get everything when they come back online.
Private when needed
End-to-end encryption for personal messages. Only you and your correspondent can read the content.
Days of battery life
LoRa technology consumes minimal power. Devices run for days to weeks, far outlasting any smartphone.
Growing nationwide coverage
More devices and repeaters appear weekly across Britain. Each addition extends the reach for everyone.
When you need offline messaging
Situations where internet-free communication proves essential:
-
✓
Blackouts and power failures: When the grid goes down, mobile masts follow within hours. Mesh communication continues on battery.
-
✓
Severe weather events: Storms damage cables and flood exchanges. Radio Signals bypass the wreckage.
-
✓
Remote locations: Hillwalking in Snowdonia, sailing off the coast, camping in the Highlands – mobile coverage is patchy at best.
-
✓
Crowded events: Festivals and matches overwhelm local mobile capacity. The mesh handles additional traffic gracefully.
-
✓
Household and street networks: Ensure family and neighbours can reach each other regardless of commercial network status.
-
✓
Business continuity: Maintain communication between sites when your corporate network has failed.
Offline messaging questions
Do messages really travel without any internet?
Completely. LoRa radio Signals pass directly between devices. No router, no ISP, no backbone network involved. Works during total infrastructure blackouts.
How far can messages travel?
Mesh routing means distance matters less than you might think. London to Manchester, or Bristol to Birmingham, becomes feasible when repeaters bridge the route.
What if the recipient is offline when I send?
The network stores your message and delivers it automatically once they return to range. Store-and-forward handles timing seamlessly.
Are offline messages encrypted?
Private one-to-one messages use end-to-end encryption. Channel messages (group chats) are visible to all channel members.
Can I send pictures or attachments?
MeshCore handles text and GPS coordinates only. LoRa bandwidth is deliberately low to maximise range and battery life. For emergencies, text is sufficient.
Is there a limit on messages?
No hard limit, but fair-use throttling prevents any single user from congesting the network. Normal conversation volumes work perfectly.
Stay connected without connectivity
Offline messaging via MeshCore mesh network offers an independent communication option when internet-based services are unavailable. Useful for remote areas, outdoor activities, and community networks. LocalMesh is a community project. Coverage depends on volunteer participation and varies by location. Not a replacement for emergency services – always dial 999 in emergencies.
