Heltec V2
The previous generation Heltec board. Still works with MeshCore but has been superseded by significantly improved successors.
Important: 868 MHz for Europe
Always buy the 868 MHz version for use in Europe. The 915 MHz version (US) is not allowed in Europe.
Understanding the Heltec V2
The Heltec WiFi LoRa 32 V2 served the mesh networking community well for several years. Built around an ESP32 processor paired with the SX1276 LoRa chip, it provided a reliable foundation for off-grid communication experimentation.
Heltec has discontinued production of this board. While existing units continue functioning perfectly well with MeshCore firmware, new purchases should target the V3 or V4 which offer substantial improvements in efficiency and capability.
Guidance: If you already own a V2, keep using it. If purchasing new hardware, skip directly to the V3 or V4.

Why the V2 has been retired
For years the V2 represented a solid choice for Meshtastic and MeshCore projects. Extensive documentation exists and the community accumulated considerable experience with this hardware.
However, the V2 shows its age in two critical areas. Sleep current consumption of approximately 800μA compares poorly to sub-10μA figures from the V3. The SX1276 LoRa chip offers inferior sensitivity compared to the SX1262 in newer boards. Micro USB has also given way to USB-C.
Existing V2 boards remain fully capable MeshCore devices. Firmware support continues. For new deployments, however, the performance gap makes the V3 or V4 clearly preferable.
Purchasing options
The V2 is no longer manufactured. New stock is unavailable. Consider the Heltec V3 or V4 for new purchases.
