What is the LilyGo T-Deck?
Before the Plus came along, the LilyGo T-Deck pioneered the standalone mesh communicator concept. This Blackberry-inspired device pairs an ESP32-S3 processor with a 2.8" touchscreen and optional LoRa module, creating a platform that sparked imaginations across the mesh community.
This remains the developer-focused variant: battery and enclosure ship separately, leaving you free to configure things precisely as you wish. A dedicated ESP32-C3 chip manages the keyboard independently, ensuring reliable text input regardless of what the main processor is doing.
LilyGo has produced open-source IoT hardware from Shenzhen since 2018. The T-Deck represented a breakthrough moment, finally giving mesh enthusiasts a self-contained device that didn't require constant smartphone interaction.

Why the T-Deck?
The original T-Deck speaks to developers and hardware enthusiasts who relish customisation. Select your preferred battery capacity, utilise the Grove connector for sensor integration, and maintain complete control over your build.
Type messages directly using the physical keyboard and navigate menus via the trackball, recalling the tactile satisfaction of early smartphones. Running Meshtastic MUI firmware, the device operates entirely independently of any smartphone.
Guidance: Prefer something ready to use immediately? The T-Deck Plus bundles battery, GPS, and housing together. The original T-Deck costs less (approximately £52) but demands sourcing additional components yourself.
